SEO is still the foundation of AI visibility
Google’s current guidance says pages appearing as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must already be indexed and eligible to appear in Search. There is no special AI schema or secret file that replaces crawling, internal linking, page experience and people-first content.
AEO—answer engine optimization—and GEO—generative engine optimization—are useful labels for a changing discovery experience. In practice, the work still begins with strong SEO: one accessible URL, a descriptive title, helpful headings, crawlable text and a page that satisfies the visitor.
Use an answer-first page structure
Start important pages with a concise answer to the primary question. Then add the reasoning, evidence, scenarios and limitations a serious buyer needs. This allows a person to understand the page quickly while giving search and AI systems enough context to interpret it accurately.
- Direct answer
Explain the decision in two or three sentences. - Experience
Add what your team has learned from real delivery. - Evidence
Use examples, screenshots, measurements and credible citations. - Next action
Offer a relevant audit, consultation or implementation path.
Create information AI cannot obtain from a generic summary
Commodity articles repeat definitions. Useful articles show trade-offs: what failed, which constraint changed the recommendation, what a realistic implementation includes and when the popular approach is wrong. Google’s generative-AI guidance specifically emphasizes unique, non-commodity and people-first content.
Make the business entity unambiguous
Use the same organization name, address, phone, service descriptions and ownership details across the website and relevant business profiles. Organization structured data can reinforce visible information, but it must match the page. Do not add awards, reviews or locations that users cannot verify.
Measure conversions from AI search
Track which landing pages receive impressions, which questions generate qualified sessions and whether those visitors call, submit a form or request a demonstration. Visibility without commercial relevance is not the goal.
Do businesses need an llms.txt file for Google AI visibility?
No. Google states that special AI files or special markup are not required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A technically healthy, indexable and useful website matters more.
Can AEO or GEO guarantee an AI citation?
No. Search engines decide when AI features appear and which sources support an answer. Optimization improves clarity and eligibility; it cannot guarantee inclusion or ranking.
